The Wisdom Tooth is mostly problematic for almost every person and they cause big problems to humans. But luckily this problem can be solved with the help of Dentists.

The process is known as Wisdom Tooth Extraction, in this process, the dental surgeon basically performs surgery for Wisdom Teeth Removal. Basically, the problem that most commonly arises is that sometimes a wisdom tooth does not get or have room to grow which is called Impacted wisdom tooth which further results in problems like pain, infection or any other dental problem. Due to these conditions, most of the surgeons advise having a Wisdom Tooth Extraction so that they infect the other teeth in mouth further and the patient gets permanent relief from the pain. There are many cases in which the dentists recommend Wisdom Teeth Removal even if the teeth are not causing any problem. They do so to prevent future complications which occur due to these teeth as they need proper care and if they do not get much care, they will cause infections, pain or tooth damage in future.

Why is there a Need for Extraction :

The Wisdom teeth or the third molars of our denture are the last appearings (erupting) permanent teeth in the mouth. The normal age of appearing of wisdom teeth us between 17 and 25, even there are some people who never develop wisdom teeth for their whole life. In other cases, the third molars appear normally as their other molars did without any major problems.

But there are some cases where the development of impacted wisdom teeth takes place. The impacted wisdom teeth are the ones which don’t have enough space to erupt into the mouth or to develop normally. These impacted widow teeth erupt little bit or not at all.

There are some predictions of impacted wisdom tooth which are :

✦ They grow at an angle towards the second molar

✦ They grow at an angle which is towards the back of the mouth

✦ They grow at a right angle to the other teeth

✦ They grow straight like other teeth but get stuck in the jaw bone

But the reality is that it is very difficult to predict future problems that an Impacted wisdom tooth can cause. So here is the rationale, the asymptomatic wisdom teeth can still harbour disease, when there is no proper space for teeth to develop then cleaning it properly is the biggest problem, not much complications happen in younger adults but older adults may experience some difficulties with the surgery.

Risks in Wisdom Tooth Extraction :

There are very rare cases of any complications in the surgery or after the surgery. Mostly they don’t last for long terms as well. But as the impacted wisdom teeth sometimes require a surgical approach which involves an incision in the gum tissues and in the removal of bones so there can be some risks (rarely occurs mostly) :

  • Pain in the surgical area or the bone gets exposed when the post-surgical blood clot is lost from the surgical area
  • Bacteria, food or debris causes infections
  • Any nearby teeth, nerve, jawbone gets damaged

Diagnosis :

When you visit the dentist, they will diagnose the real problem and will advise you accordingly whether surgery is needed or not. However, if the tooth is deeply impacted then the dentist will tell you for the Wisdom Tooth Extraction. The surgery will be performed in the office with world-class equipment and the surgeon may suggest sedation to you instead of local anaesthesia, to be more comfortable during surgery.

Kind of Surgery :

Wisdom Tooth Extraction is an outpatient procedure mostly, which means that you can go back to your home on the same day.

The hospital will give you all the instructions related to the surgery before the surgery and after the surgery as well they will tell you about the precautions and dos to you.

Is Wisdom Tooth Removal Painful, the answer is yes if anaesthesia is not given, otherwise you won’t feel any pain if your dentist has given you anaesthesia.

During Surgery :

Mostly the dentist or oral surgeon will use any one of these listed types of anaesthesias, which will depend on the complexity of the wisdom tooth extraction and your comfort level. The options of anaesthesias are as follows :

  • Local Anesthesia: The dentist or oral surgeon will use local anaesthesia with one or more than one injections near the area which is needed to be operated for wisdom teeth removal. The dentist will spray some numb spray on your gums before giving you injection so that you don’t feel the pain. During this type of procedure, you will be awake the whole time and you feel sensations that something is going on in your mouth and will feel some pressure as well but you should not be experiencing any pain.
  • Sedation Anesthesia: The dentist will use sedation anaesthesia and will give you through an IV (intravenous) line which means through the vein of your arm to make you feel drowsy. Your consciousness then will be suppressed and you will not feel any pain and will have barely any memory of the surgery procedure. The local anaesthesia will still be used to make your gums numb.
  • General Anesthesia: The dentist will use the general anaesthesia in special situations where you will inhale some medicines through your nose through a mask or will have an IV line in your arm or both can take place. You lose total consciousness here and will not remember anything related to the surgical procedures and the local anaesthesia is used to help in preventing the postoperative discomforts.

Steps were taken during Wisdom Tooth Extraction by a dentist :

First making an incision in the gum to expose the tooth and bone

Cutting or removing the bones that block the tooth root

If dividing makes easier to remove teeth, then the dentist will divide the tooth into sections to remove in pieces

Removing the tooth using a tool

Removing the debris, blood or anything else from the site

Stitching the wound to promote healing, some dentist use self-dissolving threads which don’t need cutting.

Placing a gauze over the wound so that bleeding gets control and does not make a bold clot
